Why Interior Designers Join the NKBA: Certifications, Resources, and Community

In the world of interior design, kitchen and bath spaces represent some of the most technically complex, high-value areas of any residential project. The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) is the leading non-profit trade association dedicated to promoting professionalism and excellence in kitchen and bath design, remodeling, and construction. Founded in 1963, NKBA has grown into a global community of more than 50,000 members, including interior designers, manufacturers, remodelers, installers, architects, educators, and students. It is also the owner and producer of the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS), the largest kitchen and bath trade event in North America.

Origins and Early History

NKBA was originally founded as the American Institute of Kitchen Dealers (AIKD) in April 1963 by a small group of kitchen dealers near Philadelphia. The idea was initiated by a letter from Leon Raider, a representative of Kitchen Kompact, calling for the formation of a trade association for kitchen professionals. AIKD’s founding members contributed just $463 to launch the association, setting monthly dues at $10. The first president was H. Dean Church.

From its earliest days, AIKD prioritized education, industry standards, and public awareness. One of its first major initiatives was developing a certification for kitchen design professionals. This led to the creation of the Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) designation. In 1968, Robert Wieland became the first certified designer under this program. In collaboration with the University of Illinois Small Homes Council, AIKD developed the Kitchen Industry Technical Manuals, a precursor to the formal design guidelines and certification criteria used today.

As the industry evolved, so did the association. AIKD was renamed the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) to reflect its expansion into bathroom design. The association introduced the Certified Bath Designer (CBD) credential in 1989 and celebrated its 25th anniversary by launching the industry’s first Hall of Fame.

Today, NKBA’s mission is to inspire, lead, and empower the kitchen and bath industry by creating marketplaces, networks, and certifications that foster excellence and innovation. Its vision is to ensure that everyone enjoys safe, beautiful, and functional kitchen and bath spaces.

Certifications & Professional Development

NKBA provides a clearly defined certification pathway designed to support long-term career growth in kitchen and bath design—from foundational education to advanced professional distinction. The association currently offers two nationally recognized credentials:

  • Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer (CKBD): This certification demonstrates advanced knowledge in residential kitchen and bath design, including technical planning, mechanical and construction systems, and client collaboration. A minimum of five years of industry experience is required.
  • Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD): The CMKBD credential is NKBA’s highest professional distinction, recognizing exceptional experience, education, and leadership in the kitchen and bath industry. Candidates must hold the CKBD credential for a required period and meet advanced education, experience, and professional contribution criteria.

Earlier NKBA certifications such as Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD), Certified Bath Designer (CBD), Associate Kitchen & Bath Designer (AKBD), and Certified Kitchen & Bath Installer (CKBI) are no longer offered. These credentials were formally retired as NKBA consolidated its certification pathway.

NKBA also supports design schools through its Affiliated Schools Program, which offers curriculum resources, access to NKBA competitions, and educator benefits. Schools that participate can align their programs with NKBA industry standards, helping students prepare for careers in kitchen and bath design.

Beyond academic programs, NKBA provides ongoing professional development through a range of continuing education opportunities:

  • CEU-accredited online, on-demand, virtual, and in-person education, supported by a digital Knowledge Base offering business tools, design templates, and continuing education content
  • Educational webinars and design business resources
  • Student competitions and mentorship opportunities

Key Design Competitions

  • NKBA Student Design Competition – Open to students enrolled in NKBA-affiliated programs, judged by industry experts. Winners receive scholarships, national exposure, and are recognized at KBIS.
  • NKBA Design + Industry Awards – Recognizes outstanding work from certified professionals and firms in categories such as kitchen, bath, specialty spaces, and sustainability.
  • Thirty Under 30 Program – Celebrates rising stars under the age of 30 who are making a significant impact on the kitchen and bath industry.

Winning entries are published across NKBA’s media platforms and recognized at KBIS, offering visibility and credibility within the industry.

NKBA certifications are not one-time credentials. Certified professionals are required to maintain their designation through continuing education units (CEUs) and annual certification fees, ensuring that credential holders remain current with evolving codes, standards, and industry best practices.

Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines

NKBA’s Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines with Access Standards are the industry benchmark for functional, ergonomic, and code-compliant design. These guidelines not only address spatial planning and workflow efficiency, but also incorporate accessibility principles to support inclusive design. The Access Standards provide best practices for accommodating individuals of varying ages, sizes, and abilities—such as wheelchair clearance, reach ranges, and adaptable fixtures.

Though not a legal code, these recommendations are informed by universal design and ADA concepts, making them essential for design professionals who prioritize safety, comfort, and longevity in their projects. These guidelines are foundational to NKBA education and certifications and are regularly updated to reflect evolving design standards and accessibility best practices.

Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS)

NKBA owns and produces KBIS, the largest trade show in North America dedicated to kitchen and bath design. The event is held annually in conjunction with the International Builders’ Show during Design & Construction Week.

Key Features of KBIS:

  • Premier showcase of new kitchen and bath products, technologies, and materials
  • CEU-accredited education sessions and certification opportunities
  • Thought leadership panels featuring top designers, manufacturers, and innovators
  • Networking with thousands of industry professionals, from designers to builders
  • A showcase for sustainability-focused solutions and emerging technology in kitchen and bath design

Market Research & Industry Insights

NKBA publishes the Kitchen & Bath Market Index (KBMI), a quarterly research report that tracks industry conditions, business confidence, and economic trends that offers:

  • Economic outlook and growth indicators
  • Business confidence levels among industry professionals
  • Trends in consumer behavior and project demand
  • Insights into labor and supply chain challenges

This research helps members benchmark performance and prepare for shifting market conditions.

Legislative Advocacy & Workforce Development

NKBA actively tracks legislation that impacts the kitchen and bath industry—particularly regulations around licensure, code compliance, and trade practice. The association advocates for:

  • Fair recognition and inclusion of certified kitchen and bath professionals
  • Clear and consistent practice rights across states and provinces
  • Collaboration between design and construction sectors to strengthen industry influence

Workforce development remains a core priority. Through strategic partnerships, educational initiatives, and member engagement, NKBA works to address skilled labor shortages, support emerging talent, and promote careers in kitchen and bath design. Programs like student outreach, local chapter mentorship, and participation in industry events ensure the next generation of professionals is informed and equipped.

NKBA members are also held to a formal Standards of Conduct, outlining ethical, professional, and business practice expectations. This framework reinforces NKBA’s role in promoting credibility, accountability, and trust within the kitchen and bath industry.

Is NKBA the right fit for you?

NKBA is a powerful resource for interior designers and industry professionals who specialize—or want to specialize—in kitchen and bath. Its certifications, planning guidelines, research insights, and networking opportunities offer clear advantages for those seeking to build credibility, stay on top of trends, and connect with a like-minded professional community.

However, NKBA isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. The scope is highly focused on kitchen and bath, which may not serve designers whose work spans broader or unrelated disciplines. Its certifications, while prestigious, require years of experience—making them less accessible for those just starting out. Membership and event participation also come at a cost, which may be a consideration for newer or smaller practices. And for professionals outside the U.S., NKBA’s offerings may feel less localized.

That said, if your design business is rooted in or expanding into the kitchen and bath market, NKBA offers unparalleled support. For committed professionals ready to invest in their growth, it remains one of the most authoritative and future-forward associations in the field for education, certification, and community.
